Day 4 - 5/21

Image
I started off my last day of work by going to Lowes. I got a few more bags of rock, which I had to carry over again. I also got bird seed to fill up the bird feeders with. I removed the plants and the stones that I had put there before so that I could put the new rocks down. I ended up moving the plants and stones around as well. The rocks covered all of the paper, and I was really satisfied. I started putting the stones back, and it was hard to get them in properly when there's so many rocks. After that I just put my plants back on the stones. Then I filled up the bird feeders, and I was done. I thought it looked great. The final product is below, from two different angles. I was super happy with how it turned out, and if you go back to my first post and see where I started, the transformation is shocking.      Overall I would say I learned a lot from this project. I've never really done any sort of gardening project before. I had fun with it. I kind of wish that it wasn'

Day 3 - 5/20

The third day is when things really started to come together. I started by bringing the bags of rocks over, they were super heavy. I then began cutting open each bag and pouring the rocks on to the paper. I was trying to spread them out as best as I could, but it wasn't working very well. The paper made it hard for me to move them in the way I wanted to. By the time all the rocks were down, I could still see some of the black paper (you can see in the picture below). I didn't know what to do, so I got a garden rake to try to spread them out even more. It actually worked pretty well, but soon I realized that I simply didn't have enough rocks. I would say I wish I measured this first, but I didn't really know how to determine that. I needed to go back to Lowes the next day to get more rocks. I needed bird seed as well. I was putting the large stones down for the plants while I was doing this, keeping them spaced apart. The stones act as a platform for the plants, rather t

Day 2 - 5/19

The second day of my project was easily the most frustrating. Today was the day that I began to put down the border. Each border has four holes across the top, with stakes for each. Trying to make it into an oval type shape was difficult because the borders wouldn't really bend how I wanted them to. It turned out looking fine, but was a hard process. Putting the stakes through the borders was also difficult. There is a little piece of plastic on the bottom of each hole that prevents the stake from puncturing the ground. Once you break this piece, it's not hard. But getting to that point takes so much effort. I think I ended up bending 3 or 4 of them. By the end of this my arm was incredibly sore. I also ran into a very annoying problem when there would be rocks underground and the stake wouldn't go any deeper. I would either reposition the stake or just get the rock out myself. After a while it was finally done. Then I used a weed eater to cut all of the grass in the middl

Day 1 - 5/18

The goal of my journey project was to create a space for plants and flowers around my bird feeders in my backyard. I originally wanted to plant the flowers in the ground, and make something more like a flower bed. However they wouldn't have grown in time for me to implement in my project. I instead ended up using potted plants. It was my mom's idea and she asked me to do it, so I wanted to make it look really nice. I began doing some research for inspiration and materials. The first thing I did was go to Lowe's and get the supplies that I needed. I needed borders, rocks, plants, stones, and paper to put the rocks on. My mother helped me pick out what I needed to get. She loves gardening and spends a lot of time outside. She was the one who inspired me to do this project. Once we got the supplies and got home I began to work. The first thing and probably one of the hardest was getting the supplies to my work area. Each bag of rocks weighed 40 pounds, and I had eight of them.
