Day 1 - 5/18

The goal of my journey project was to create a space for plants and flowers around my bird feeders in my backyard. I originally wanted to plant the flowers in the ground, and make something more like a flower bed. However they wouldn't have grown in time for me to implement in my project. I instead ended up using potted plants. It was my mom's idea and she asked me to do it, so I wanted to make it look really nice. I began doing some research for inspiration and materials. The first thing I did was go to Lowe's and get the supplies that I needed. I needed borders, rocks, plants, stones, and paper to put the rocks on. My mother helped me pick out what I needed to get. She loves gardening and spends a lot of time outside. She was the one who inspired me to do this project. Once we got the supplies and got home I began to work. The first thing and probably one of the hardest was getting the supplies to my work area. Each bag of rocks weighed 40 pounds, and I had eight of them. I felt like I was at summer football practice again. The second thing I did was measure the area around, and determine if I would need to cut any of the borders (I never needed to cut them). Then, I began removing what was there. I took the bird feeders out of the ground which was tricky, I also moved the old stones out of the way. You can see in the picture how boring it used to look. The grass looks bad and it's just boring, There's no color. This was all that I did on the first day. It was pretty hot the whole week and working outside was not enjoyable.
